Snake Fungal Disease?

Postby justingos » February 3rd, 2014, 7:00 pm

I saw a picture from South Carolina of a copperhead that was collected in Spartanburg County that had a confirmed case of SFG. I know we had a very wet year in 2013 in the eastern US. I wonder if this has something to do with the proliferation of this disease in our local herpetofauna?

I found this Eastern Milk Snake in August 2012 in Oconee County,SC. It looked to have some kind of a skin disease and was in a shed cycle. Does it look like it may have the disease?

Has anyone seen this condition in this area of the Southeast? I've heard its highly contagious and I wonder of the implications of it spreading through the native populations.

I remember as a kid (early 90's) seeing numerous local black rat snakes with blister-like skin infections. I wonder if this is just part of a natural cycle?

Any input on this issue is appreciated.
